We know that between the two services, Google has over 15 million paying subscribers. Yesterday, I noticed that Google Play Music was updated to address a bug on iOS 13, so there must be enough people still using it to have made that fix a priority.
I asked a spokesperson for a status update on that this afternoon and have yet to hear back. Unfortunately, YouTube is still unable to say exactly when it will migrate user libraries from Google Play Music over to YouTube Music. Other apps including Netflix are also moving into this lane Netflix’s smart downloads can now save the next episode of whatever you’re watching so it’s ready to go right away, and it’ll automatically delete episodes you’ve already finished.
Just because I was listening to something the other day doesn't mean that’s what I’ll want to hear on a flight or during my daily commute, so I’ll stick with manual.īut smart downloads might be useful if you tend to forget about saving music for offline listening until it’s too late. And I’m too much of a control freak to trust an algorithm to populate that list.
I’m not sure who really needs an app to download so much music on its own. YouTube gave me an example of what this might look like for the average user: “Offline Mixtape, Pop Hotlist, Summer 2019 playlist, Kacey Musgraves album.” So it’s enough to get you through a few hours of getting stuck without the ability to stream tunes. That selection includes the Offline Mixtape (a 100-song playlist based on your listening history) and “songs from your Liked Songs playlist and your other favorite playlists and albums.” You can set a limit for how much music smart downloads will pull down, and the process only happens at night and when your phone is connected to Wi-Fi. Simple as that.YouTube Music is expanding upon its Offline Mixtape feature with a more thorough version it’s now calling “smart downloads.” When you enable smart downloads, the app will automatically download up to 500 songs that you’ll be able to listen to anywhere - whether or not you’ve got a data connection. To see your uploads, click the down arrow next to YouTube Music, and click Uploads. On desktop, head to (opens in new tab) in a web browser, and click Library > Albums, Songs or Artists to see your tunes. On a mobile device, open the YouTube Music app and tap Library > then Albums, Songs or Artists and then the Uploads tab. It's simple to find songs that you either purchased or uploaded. Stations with 'radio' in their name will not transfer to YouTube Music. To listen to an artist or radio that you've listened to in Google Play Music, search for that artist or radio and tap Start Radio.
In YouTube Music, stations are just playlists that you can view like any other playlist. YouTube Music Downloader is an easy-to-use Windows application that downloads YouTube music videos to your PC and converting them into MP3 and more media formats. The way the app works is slightly different too. To find your stations and liked songs, tap Library > Playlists > and then either Your Likes or just find the station or playlist you want. When you open the YouTube Music app, you'll notice it looks a little different to Google Play Music. Other family members will automatically have their accounts transferred unless they don't meet YouTube Music's eligibility criteria (opens in new tab) (which is a bit stricter than Google Play Music's – YouTube users have to be aged 13 or over). If you're transferring a family account, only the person who manages the billing can transfer that portion. Google will let you know if you need to confirm your billing details before completing the transfer. Your monthly billing rate, payment date and general billing details should stay the same. You'll receive separate emails for each telling you when they've successfully migrated. If you have a large music library, it might take longer to transfer across to YouTube Music than your billing information. But if your music disappeared from Google Play Music for the same reason, there's a chance it could reappear in your YouTube Music library. Some songs and albums might not transfer due to rights or licensing issues. If you do multiple transfers, only the music added since your last transfer will be included in the latest transfer. You can transfer as many times as you like until Google Play Music closes. Don't already have one? You can set one up (opens in new tab) in just a few seconds. You may need a YouTube channel in order to complete the migration. There are two ways to transfer your music over.ġ: Head to /transfer (opens in new tab) and click Transfer.Ģ: On the YouTube Music app, tap your profile picture and then Settings > Transfer > Transfer from Google Play Music.Īnd that's it.
